Don Recaps Season 2 - Episode 4
I am so thrilled THAT METAL SHOW has been a part of spreading the word about the fantastic metal documentary "Anvil! The Story Of Anvil." If you aren't familiar with this great Canadian metal band, they had their 15 minutes of fame back in the mid-80's playing all the big festivals and earning the respect of all their metal peers but never gaining the same level of popularity. 20 years later, they are still at it and this hilarious/heart-touching doc tells their story. In turn, they are finally getting the respect and attention they deserve. Hope you guys loved this show as much as I did.
At the top of the show we talked about "hair metal" bands and how they don't get any respect. And sure, back in the MTV days, I hated seeing Kip Winger running around with his scissor-cut t-shirt and perfect 5 o'clock shadow. But the truth is, it doesn't really matter how you want to classify a particular metal band. If you like it, you like it. Who cares? I can listen to Pantera, Motley, Amon Amarth, Ratt and Celtic Frost one after the other, bang my head, and not care what sub-category each band fits into.
Our POW was Buckcherry "Black Butterfly." I admittedly missed the boat on these guys the first time around but once I saw them live I was hooked. If you judge them only on "Crazy Bitch" you are truly missing out on a great hard rock 'n' roll band.
Our "What Ever Happened To" was the band Savatage. I used to play "Hall Of The Mountain King" on my college radio show all the time. Certainly they are much more than that and a cool band to go back and rediscover.
The Throwdown was Best guitar solo - "Crazy Train" vs. "Eruption." I chose "Crazy Train" for a lot of reasons but the main one being that "Eruption" is not a solo but a song. Randy Rhodes' solo in "Crazy Train" is not only a great solo, it is a part of the song that brought Ozzy back from the dead. And that is a good thing (minus the "Black Rain" album). Also, I don't want Sharon to kick my ass if we run into one another! Eddie has had a hip replacement so I'm pretty sure I can take him!
